This is a beautiful story and book. It is the autobiography of Arthur E Hertzler. MD. Arthur begins life in a large family on a farm. HE is dirt poor and at 6'4" his pants are always too short and through secondary school he is the school misfit. But poverty is a BIG, BIG Motivator to a better life and Arthur works his butt off through medical school and after. Being a horse and buggy doctor is hard, cold, wet and not much fun, especially when folks do not pay you if that is their mind set.
Arthur has a great sense of humor and after 10 years of the horse and buggy route he takes himself and his family to Germany to study to become a surgeon.
I loved this book as a medical professional and a lover of medical and United States history. As well as Arthur being a very interesting writer and I was glued to this book till I finished it. Thank God for modern conveniences that we take for granted.
The foreword is written By Gunsmoke's DOC-the long running Western :Milburne Stone who modeled his character after an old friend from childhood-Dr Arthur E. Hertzler. Very impressive!
