I've never read anything by John Connolly, but I found I've been missing out. The Whisperers is the newest thriller in the Charlie Parker series. I love thrillers, but I don't like reading a series out of order. However, The Whisperers can be read as a stand alone and I didn't feel like I was missing any back story, as Mr. Connolly did a superb job of giving just enough character information to cover what has happened in the past that was relevant to the current story.

Charlie Parker is a Private Investigator and he is hired to delve into an ex-soldiers apparent suicide. But the deeper Charlie gets in the case, the more sinister is appears. It seems many of the Iraq soldiers have killed themselves, and that they may have brought back smuggled treasure to the US. Charlie learns about a gold antique box that may have supernatural elements leading these men to kill themselves. But Charlie has to find the box quickly, because not only more men may die, but a sinister and evil entity, The Collector, will kill anything that gets in his way of the box, including Charlie.

As I said, I love thrillers, but I'm also a big urban fantasy/paranormal fan. The Whisperers has just the right amount of the supernatural that will chill the reader. The Whisperers is an edge-of-your-seat thriller filled with suspense, plot twists and turns, unique and complex characters. Mystery, thriller and supernatural fans -- this is a must read!
