The writing for teen readers has really improved since I was a teenager, and this book is no exception to that statement. Mead creates an interesting and cohesive new world. The Moroi and their guardian Dhampir need each other to survive, but sometimes the Moroi choose evil and become the monstrous Strigoi. The guardians must then track them down and kill them.
This story focuses on Lissa, the Moroi princess and the only remaining member of her family, and Rose, the Dhampir bonded to Lissa and her emotions. After their escape, two years ago, they have managed to avoid capture and being returned to the Academy, but it looks like their luck has run out. Once they're back at the Academy they'll have to be on their guard against enemies, seen and unseen.
