Categories: Children's Books, Literary Fiction The Association for Library Service to Children annually awards the Caldecott Medal to the illustrator of the most distinguished American picture book for children. This award was first given in 1938, and is named for the famous nineteenth century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. The scene on the face of the bronze medal is from Caldecott’s illustration for The Diverting Story of John Gilpin, in which Gilpin is astride a runaway horse. “Runners up” or Honor books are awarded the Caldecott Honors citation. |
